Laing Cooked out of Love

Laing is a popular Filipino dish made from taro leaves, coconut milk, and various spices. Here's a recipe for Laing that you can try:


  • 1 lb taro leaves
  • 2 cups coconut milk
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 lb pork belly, sliced into small pieces
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 thumb-sized ginger, sliced
  • 4 pieces bird's eye chili, chopped
  • 2 tbsp shrimp paste
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Cooking oil


  1. Wash the taro leaves thoroughly and cut them into thin strips. Set aside.

  2. In a pan, heat oil over medium heat. Add the pork belly and cook until browned.

  3. Add the garlic, onion, ginger, and bird's eye chili. Saute for a few minutes until fragrant.

  4. Add the shrimp paste and saute for another minute.

  5. Add the coconut milk and water. Bring to a boil.

  6. Add the taro leaves and stir well. Let it simmer for about 20-30 minutes or until the taro leaves are cooked.

  7. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  8. Serve hot with steamed rice.
